CAN FARMERS SURVIVE THESE?
The times we are in are very precarious and challenging. The cost of Inputs is rising astronomically while the farm gate prices for outputs remain the same.
Optimism appears to be a luxury most farmers can not afford.
Prices of commercial poultry feeds are rising every week.
Drugs, vaccines, and equipment are not getting affordable.
No doubt, many farms especially in Nigeria, may shut down operations.
It will be worse for those on a subsistence scale.
The purchasing power of consumers is thinning down, especially with unfriendly national economic policies.
I make bold to say, it is possible for you as a farmer to survive but not without strict structural and operational adjustment.
No nation can survive hunger.
If Agriculture becomes unsustainable, then we are doomed.
While we expect the government of African nations to implement a blueprint for sustainable agriculture, I want to implore farmers to hold on till the end.
If you quit, a vacuum will be created. Nature abhors vacuums, hence your absence will create a supply gap which may lead to an appropriate price hike in farm output.
Simply put, if you leave, someone will take your place.
My counsel is not to sell your products at a loss
Hold on! It is hard, so do it hard.
In 2015, a crate of eggs was sold for #650, it now goes for an average of 2000 or more.
Above all, I must state that with a strong resolve, farmers ought not to be at the mercy of consumers.
"All too often people quit when the going gets tough - often when just one more step would have carried them triumphantly to victory" ~ Napoleon Hill.
